Since November 2022, APS certification is mandatory for every Indian student applying to a German university — Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD. No APS certificate means your visa gets rejected, regardless of how strong your admission is. This is the single most important document in your application stack.
TL;DR: APS is a pre-verification of your academic documents by the German Embassy in India. Cost: €85 (~₹7,800). Timeline: 4–8 weeks. Required before visa and often before university admission. Apply as early as possible.
What is APS?
APS stands for “Akademische Prüfstelle” — Academic Evaluation Centre. It is run by the German Embassy in New Delhi. Its job is to verify that your Indian academic documents are genuine and that your degree is recognized in Germany. The output is a certificate and a unique APS ID you will use on every German university application and visa form.
Who needs APS?
- Every Indian national applying for a degree program in Germany (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD).
- Includes applicants with degrees from India, even if you currently live outside India.
- Exemptions: Erasmus exchange students, students on DAAD-funded short programs, and applicants with their most recent degree from a non-Indian university (but this is case-by-case — verify on the APS India website).

The step-by-step process
- Register online at aps-india.de. Create an account, fill in personal and academic details.
- Upload scanned documents. Every marksheet, every semester. Missing one semester is the #1 reason for delays.
- Pay the fee — €85 via bank transfer (roughly ₹7,800 depending on the day’s rate). Keep the transaction slip.
- Submit physical copies by post to the APS office in New Delhi (current address is on their website).
- Wait for document review — 2–4 weeks typically.
- Attend the interview — virtual (via Webex) for most applicants since 2023. About 15 minutes. See next section.
- Receive the certificate — 2–4 weeks after the interview. Sent by post to your Indian address.
The APS interview — what to expect
The interview is a friendly, not adversarial, 15-minute conversation conducted in English. The interviewer (a German academic expert) will ask:
- Walk me through your Bachelor’s subjects — what did you study in semester X?
- What was your final-year project about?
- Why Germany? Why this program?
- Which universities have you applied to?
- Basic technical questions from your major (if engineering — circuit analysis, thermodynamics basics, etc.)
The goal is to verify that you actually studied what your marksheet says. Students who buy degrees are filtered out here. If you genuinely studied, the interview is easy.
Timeline — plan backwards from your intake
- Winter intake (October start): Apply for APS by March–April. University deadlines are usually 15 July.
- Summer intake (April start): Apply for APS by September–October. University deadlines are usually 15 January.
- Total process time: 6–10 weeks is realistic. Allow 12 weeks in peak application months (March–July).
Common mistakes that delay APS
- Uploading marksheets without official seals.
- Missing backlog/supplementary exam marksheets.
- Name mismatch between passport and academic documents (initials vs full name).
- Sending by courier instead of registered post (they insist on India Post registered).
- Applying too late — leaving <6 weeks before visa appointment.
Do you need APS before you apply to universities?
Most universities will accept your application without an APS number but will not issue an admission letter until you provide it. A growing number of universities (TUM, RWTH, LMU) now require the APS at the point of application. Safe rule: get APS first, apply to universities second.
