Uni-Assist is the centralized application portal used by 170+ German universities to process applications from international students. If you are an Indian student applying to a German Master’s, there is a 70% chance at least one of your target universities routes through Uni-Assist. Understanding it saves you weeks of confusion and several hundred euros.
TL;DR: Uni-Assist pre-checks your documents for German universities. First application: €75. Each additional: €30. Get a VPD (preliminary review) for many unis — it converts your Indian grades to the German scale. Processing takes 4–6 weeks.
What is Uni-Assist?
Uni-Assist e.V. is a non-profit based in Berlin that screens international applications on behalf of German universities. It verifies your documents, checks if your Indian Bachelor’s is equivalent to a German one, and converts your GPA to the German 1.0–4.0 grading scale. Once Uni-Assist is satisfied, it forwards your application to the actual university, which then makes the admission decision.
Which universities use Uni-Assist?
- Use Uni-Assist: TU Berlin, Universität Stuttgart, TU Darmstadt, Universität Heidelberg, FU Berlin, Universität Hamburg, Universität Bonn — and 160+ more.
- Do NOT use Uni-Assist (direct application): TU München, RWTH Aachen, KIT, Universität Mannheim, LMU München, Universität Göttingen.
Always verify on the individual university’s admissions page — some universities use Uni-Assist for some programs and direct applications for others.
VPD — what it is and why it matters
VPD stands for “Vorprüfungsdokumentation” — Preliminary Documentation. It is a standalone Uni-Assist report that converts your Indian academic history into the German equivalent: degree recognized (yes/no), German grade (e.g., Bachelor’s 62% = German 2.4), and ECTS credits.
Many universities that accept direct applications (like KIT or Mannheim) still require a VPD from Uni-Assist alongside your direct application. Cost of a standalone VPD: €75.
Uni-Assist fees — the exact breakdown
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| First application (first university) | €75 |
| Each additional university (same semester) | €30 |
| VPD only (no forwarding) | €75 |
| Application for a new semester | €75 (counts as first) |
Realistic planning: 5 universities through Uni-Assist in one semester = €75 + 4 × €30 = €195 (~₹18,000). Budget for it.

Documents required
- Bachelor’s degree certificate (or provisional if final year)

- CV in English, German, or both

- Letters of Recommendation (usually 2)
- Passport bio page
- APS certificate (mandatory)

Common Uni-Assist rejections and how to avoid them
- Incomplete semester transcripts: Even one missing semester triggers a delay. Include backlogs clearly marked.
- Unattested copies: Most hard copies need an official attestation from your university or a notary.
- English translation missing: If any document is in Hindi / regional language, provide a certified English translation.
- Degree equivalency issue: 3-year Bachelor’s (BA, BSc, BCom) is usually not equivalent to a German Bachelor’s. 4-year B.Tech/B.E. is. This matters a lot.
- Name mismatch: Passport vs marksheets. Add an affidavit if different.
Timeline — work backwards
For Winter intake (1 October start), target submission by 15 May. Deadline is usually 15 July but Uni-Assist itself takes 4–6 weeks, so submitting on the last day means your application is not even forwarded in time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all German universities use Uni-Assist?
No. Around 170+ do, but big names like TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT, LMU, Mannheim, and Göttingen accept direct applications — though most still require a VPD from Uni-Assist as a supporting document.
What is a VPD and do I need one?
VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is Uni-Assist’s preliminary review of your academic record. It converts your Indian GPA to the German grading scale. Many universities with direct applications still require a VPD. Standalone VPD costs €75.
How much does Uni-Assist cost for 5 universities?
€195 total: €75 for the first application plus €30 for each of the next four, within the same semester.
How long does Uni-Assist take to process my application?
4–6 weeks for the document and equivalency review, then the university itself decides within 4–12 more weeks. Submit at least 2 months before any university deadline.
Is a 3-year Indian Bachelor’s accepted by German universities?
Generally no for Master’s admission. A 3-year BSc or BCom is treated as insufficient. A 4-year B.Tech/B.E., B.Arch, or integrated Master’s is accepted. A 3-year Bachelor’s plus a Master’s from India is also accepted.
Can I apply to universities without Uni-Assist?
Yes — TUM, RWTH, KIT and others accept direct applications. But you often still need a Uni-Assist VPD to support them.
Do I need to send physical copies?
Yes. Uni-Assist requires attested hard copies of transcripts by post to Berlin, in addition to the online upload. Use India Post registered or DHL.
